A VR Journey Through the Mythic Mind

Ocean Threshold is an immersive VR art game that explores the liminal space between life and death, trauma and transformation. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the project blends narrative abstraction, emotional truth, and interactive symbolism to create a haunting, deeply personal journey through the architecture of the subconscious.

Narrative OF THE THRESHOLD STATE

Rooted in mythological, archaic traditions, Ocean Threshold draws on the ancient concept of threshold states – critical moments or conditions in which the veil between worlds is lifted. These thresholds are psychological, spatial, and spiritual: they occur at the edge of consciousness, in altered mental states, or in liminal physical spaces.

The player steps into the fragmented psyche of an unnamed avatar. The game begins in the aftermath of a suicide attempt – a moment suspended in time. Through this rupture, the player enters a dreamlike mythoscape labyrinth, which becomes an experiential narrative of initiation and rebirth, mirroring the structure of mythic cycles: descent into darkness, transformation through struggle, and return to life with new meaning. Every space within the labyrinth reflects an emotional state, and rather than mimicking physical reality, Ocean Threshold proposes an emotive architecture of the inner world.

A Personal Myth Transformed

Ocean Threshold is a deeply autobiographical work. Through visual metaphor and immersive space, Arden Vald shares a personal story, without ever stating it outright. By transmuting pain into myth and structure, the project opens a space for empathy and understanding around the experience of depression, despair, and transformation.

It is a work of emotional honesty, mythic structure, and aesthetic innovation – intended not only as a game, but as a therapeutic and socially conscious art installation. By placing the player in a vulnerable, mythicized psychological space, it invites not only reflection, but participation – making space for others to see their own pain mirrored, restructured, and possibly, redeemed. It contributes to ongoing conversations about mental health, suicide awareness, and the healing power of storytelling, offering a poetic alternative to clinical or didactic narratives.

The project is currently in development.

Planned release date: October 2025.
